Description
A distinctive feature of the street signs in Madrid Spain is that they often come with pictures. The story goes that medieval street signs included pictures so the illiterate could read them and figure out where they were. The pictures are often associated with a feature of the street or with the occupation of the people working on that street, such as Calle de la Sal where salt merchants worked. Calle del Biombo may be named for the velvet screen placed by the nuns of the Convent of Santa Clara behind which one of the sisters attended to the poor, giving them the leftovers of food and some alms. Calle de la Traviesa translates to Street of the Naughty! You can come up with your own story for that!
