Description
Viewed from across the Plaza Mayor, the Bujaco Tower and Star Archway in Caceres Spain serve as emblems of the city as well as providing an entry into the monumental area. And on this rainy day, no other people are in evidence except for another lonely soul up under the archway. Probably, like me, he was wondering which way to go in the miserable weather! The Bujaco Tower is a relatively square Moorish tower. The name of the tower comes from that of Caliph Abú-Ya’qub, whose troops took the city in 1173. Until they finally yielded to the siege, the tower had served the knights of the Order of the Knights of Santiago as a defensive bastion. It became known as the Clock Tower in the 16th and 17th centuries. The Star Archway or Arco de la Estrella is the main entrance to the walled enclosure and the best known of the city’s historic entryways. It was opened in the fifteenth century at the same point where there had previously been only a door. By that time the wall had lost most of its defensive nature so larger openings such as this archway were constructed to allow the passage of the carriages from the Plaza Mayor. Caceres city center has an extensive collection of historical monuments and was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1986.
